Favorite poems: Eating Poetry

“There is no happiness like mine.”

That’s a line from Mark Strand‘s “Eating Poetry,” one of my longtime favorite poems. Strand’s surrealistic imagery gives the poem its verve. He uses a stereotypical librarian and a pack of dogs to outlandish effect in describing the force of ecstasy that poetry is to the poet. The poem ends: “I romp with joy in the bookish dark.”

That’s how I feel when I know I’ve got a poem on the right track.
